What to Do When You're Pulled Over: Quick Answers

Stay calm, pull over safely, keep your hands visible on the wheel, and wait for instructions.
Phrase: "Officer, is there a reason I was stopped?"
You are only required to provide your name, driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. You do not have to answer other questions.
Phrase: "I choose to remain silent."
Yes, you can refuse a search unless the officer has probable cause or a warrant.
Phrase: "I do not consent to a search."
You should comply and step out if asked, but continue to assert your rights calmly.
